About Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

The Health Promotion and Disease Prevention team is passionately dedicated to enhancing health and preventing disease for the well-being of our cherished Diné community. Our thoughtfully designed programs empower individuals and families to embrace healthy habits, significantly lowering the risk of chronic diseases and improving overall health. Together, through these vital initiatives, we strive to cultivate a brighter and healthier future for all.

Mission: To promote and embody Hózhó and holistic health.

Goal: To promote the optimal health of community members and reduce preventable diseases within the FortDefiance Indian Health Board service delivery area.

Suicide Prevention, Intervention & Postvention

An Indian Health Service grant program spanning five years aimed at reducing the prevalence of suicide among AmericanIndian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations (currently in year 3)

Programs:

  • Hozho Time With Elders

  • Si HasinSuicide Prevention Training Expos
Suicide Prevention Trainings:
  • Questions, Persuade, Refer (QPR): QPR is a suicide prevention training for participants to be able to recognize the warning signs of suicide and question, persuade, and refer people at risk for suicide for help.
  • SafeTALK: This half-day, in-person training teaches individuals ages 15 years and older steps to identify people with suicidal thoughts and connect them to resources for help and support.
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST): ASIST is a 2-day training program that teaches participants how to assist those at risk for suicide. Although many healthcare professionals use ASIST, anyone 16 years or older can use the approach, regardless of professional background.
  • Adult Mental Health First Aid: Mental Health First Aid for Adults teaches people how to recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges in adults ages 18 and older, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person toward appropriate care if necessary. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions.
  • Youth Mental Health First Aid: Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.
